Riderwood Tennis Club Receives Outstanding National Recognition

By Anonymous

SILVER SPRING, MD September 2, 2004 -- The International Council on Active Aging served Riderwood Tennis Club grand prize recognition of outstanding tennis programs for the 50-plus population during its search for successful older adult tennis programs contest. This contest supports the Welcome Back to Tennis™ initiative of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) of which International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) is a key sponsor.

With over 40 members strong and increasing in numbers, the Riderwood Tennis Club offers residents many rewards, but the greatest fulfillment for players is the social interaction according to the club’s founding resident member, Stan Diamond.

“We have residents who are getting exercise, learning tennis, but above all it is fun and encourages camaraderie and living the good life,” said Diamond.

The Riderwood Tennis Club underscores the message of the Welcome Back to Tennis™ partnership that people of all ages and abilities can have fun and stay fit playing tennis.

The grand prize winnings of the contest include two tickets to the U.S. Open in New York, U.S. Open backpack, USTA polo shirt, Wilson racket and a feature article in the Journal on Active Aging.

Members of the Riderwood Tennis Club play at least three times a week and the more skilled players engage in a competitive match once a week. Currently, the club is hosting a series of advanced tournaments and will present a Tennis Exhibition of Youth versus Age where Riderwood staff and residents will engage in a friendly match on the tennis courts at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 27, 2004.
